About the Event

The Pinewood Derby is perhaps the highlight of a Cub Scout’s year because of its fun and excitement. The Pinewood Derby race itself is essentially a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) physics racing challenge with designing a car with the best weight distribution and lowest friction. But it is also a time for a parent or guardian and a scout to work together in a hands-on project that builds skills and character. The craft skills come from learning to work with wood, planning a design, and creating a unique derby car. The character development comes from learning about sportsmanship.

The Goose Creek District Pinewood Derby Championship is where the top 5 finishers in each rank class of each Pack in Loudoun County, VA are eligible to participate. Participants in this event are families who have at least one scout ages 5-11 who has an interest in participating in Larger Community Events and STEM based activities. Annually, the event has boasted over 90% participation of Cub Scout packs representing over 1,000 scouts in the Goose Creek District (Loudoun County) generating entries from all over the county.
